Reworking the "D-Max/Driven Visions" decklid vent for Fieros.
Here is how it looked when I got it.
As you can see, very warped & inconsistent to say the least. Look how wavy each louver is across the top.
You can see the rear louver is 1/2 the height of the others. (???)
You can also see the forward louver
is actually longer than the others. why the original designers made it this way, I'm not sure.
It may have something to do with the location of the radiator on the Honda it was originally designed for.
After cutting out the center section & sanding,
you can see all the low spots in the louvers (everything that is not white looking).
After first layer of bondo & sanding.
Second layer of bondo before sanding..
"Gluing" it down to plywood strips, to flatten out the
louvers, leveling them across the top.
They were high & low in different places all the way front to rear.
Fabricating the new rearward louver from the bottom.
As you can see, I had to clamp down the last louver to match the other ones, to level it out. This part was seriously fubar!
Bondoing the front & side sections back on.
After that I went back under it & 'glassed under the sides of the louvers where that gap was (green tape).
More filler to fill & smooth...
NOTE: I should mention, for the amateur fiberglasser, that this is NOT the way to install any fiberglass piece.
Bondoing a fiberglass part on would crack out after a while.
This is simply a "plug", to make a fiberglass mold from. Once the mold is made, all this will be chiseled back
off of the decklid to make another plug (a decklid with a scoop).
Filling in the sides of the louvers.
I checked the angle of the cut-out area (arrow "A"). None of them were the same.
I don't think there was a single aspect of this part that was consistent.
Arrow "B" shows that the last louver has a different base angle, as it's the one that blends into the decklid.
A lot more bondo & sanding done....
And finally primer! Still a lot of work to be done,
but I'll be able to see what it needs better with it all in one color.
After quite a bit of blocking.
More Primer. On the whole decklid this time so I can block it all.
More Blocking. You can't tell in the photo, but I made
a curved consistent edge out of that ruler to check the top of the louvers with. The dark areas on top of the louvers need filler.
More filler.
After sanding, more filler.
After more sanding, more primer & final blocking.
Final primer. It's still not perfect, but I'm going to have to
call it ready for final sanding & to pull the mold off of. I can "tweak" the mold a little after I pull it by blocking it some.
This completes the photo album "Reworking the "D-Max/Driven Visions" decklid vent for Fieros".
I'll add this part to the "Custom Fiberglass" page, & you can keep up with
the mold making progress/availability there.
